Taliaferro, Richard

Richard Taliaferro Coaching

Plainsboro, United States

I spent 26 years inside journalism. Multiple cities. Multiple continents. Worked with multiple cable channels. I knew how to read a room, hit a deadline, and stay steady when everything else was burning. And then a 15-minute Zoom ended it. Losing the career hurt. It also forced me to confront the cost of building an identity around being reliable instead of being fully real. For years I’d watched colleagues get laid off and sit stunned when someone asked, “What are you going to do now?” Smart people. Capable people. People who had fused identity to an institution that wouldn’t hesitate to let them go. Journalism taught me to find the real story underneath the official version. Leaving it taught me this: You do the work. You are not the work. Now I work with mission-driven professionals — journalists and others who built their lives around a calling — who’ve already had the private reckoning. They’re not exploring anymore. They know something has to change. What they don’t know is who they are without the building. I help them separate identity from institution. Translate what transfers. Navigate systems that weren’t built for them. Walk into what’s next without pretending they were ever anything other than who they’ve always been. The mission can matter. The system can be broken. Both are true. The grief is real. And there’s a limit to what you owe. Ten years ago I stood in front of a mirror and said, “I’m ready,” without proof — just knowing. That’s the moment my clients are standing in now. I don’t teach them to wait for proof. I teach them to trust the readiness.
