Early in my career as a counselor in a community agency, I saw firsthand how closely a person's general sense of well-being and confidence are connected to their career identity. Also, It became apparent that career development is rarely linear. It is often circular or even web-like, with most of us experiencing the significant points of self-discovery, awareness, exploration, decision making, planning, etc. in a very personal way, with no rigidly prescribed course or order. This complexity fascinated me. Fast forward to today: For over 20 years, I have worked in the rewarding industry of higher education where I get to support a diverse student population in their career development. Every student brings unique backgrounds, experiences, and goals, making every day challenging and exciting. As I walk in the building each day, my mission is to empower students to navigate, make sense of, and perhaps even have a little fun with, that circle…or web...so that they can achieve their goals and build a strong career identity.
