Margaret Sproule

Radford, Virginia, United States

I am a Certified Career Services Provider through the National Career Development Association (NCDA) and have worked full-time as the Career Coach at Radford High School for nine years. Although I am placed at a high school, I am employed by New River Community College, and my work intersects and overlaps both secondary and post-secondary levels. At Radford High School my primary responsibilities include helping students with: academic and career planning, career assessment and exploration, post-secondary transition (including college, work, or military), support for dual-enrollment, and facilitating work-based learning. I created the "Bobcat Career Chat" lunch and learn series for our students to learn about career pathways, and I am doing work to organize "cohort" groups to explore career pathways that might not be offered at our school (e.g. Teachers for Tomorrow - education; Beautiful You - cosmetology). In my role as Career Coach I am active in the NCDA (committee chair for National Career Development month; formal mentor for another professional) and in the United Way of Southwest Virginia (youth success program). I also serve on multiple committees and grant programs for Radford City Public Schools and Radford High School, such as a CTE Innovation Grant focusing on creating a pipeline for the information technology industry. Prior to my work in career services, I taught as an adjunct instructor in higher education at Radford University, Clemson University, and Anderson College. During that time I also worked as a "master trainer" for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Tools for Healthy Schools" program. My formal education in "health promotion and health education" has served me well and equipped me with lots of transferable skills and quite a career adventure!
