Recruiter Screen
Whether your motivation for consulting is genuine, and whether you're a fit for the firm's culture.
Prep for your role
Case loops test a specific set of skills across five distinct rounds. Know what each round is grading, bring the right framework, and practice the parts that break under pressure.
A strategy consulting interview loop usually spans five stages: a recruiter screen, the case interview (market sizing, profitability, market entry, or M&A), PEI or personal-experience stories, a partner fit round, and a broader behavioral round. Each stage rewards structure, so the highest-leverage prep is a root-cause issue tree for cases and STAR stories for PEI and behavioral, rehearsed out loud.

Read the full root-cause framework guideCase bars differ: MBB weighs structured case-cracking hardest, Big Four and Accenture-style firms lean more on client fit and delivery, and boutique strategy shops often run tighter, faster cases. Later rounds concentrate weight on the case and the partner's read of you.
A root-cause issue tree, kept MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive), is the standard: break the prompt into branches, form a hypothesis about which branch matters most, quantify it, and drill down before you propose a recommendation. It stops you jumping straight to a gut-feel answer.
PEI, personal experience interview, digs deeper and more specifically than a standard behavioral round: interviewers push past the headline of your STAR story for concrete numbers, your exact role versus the team's, and what you would do differently. Shallow stories get exposed fast.
Research the specific firm, office, and practice area you are interviewing for, not the firm in general, since a generic 'why consulting' answer reads as untargeted this late in the process. Prepare a tight resume walkthrough and two or three reasons that are true only of this office.
Talk through case prompts out loud against a timer, since structure under pressure is exactly what is graded, not the final number. A voice mock interview can pose a case or PEI prompt and score whether your answer stayed structured and MECE.
